Organic Allspice, whole

Ingredient: allspice berries (Pimenta dioica/officinalis) - also known as Jamaican pepper, clove pepper, pimienta, or new spice Country of Origin: Mexico or Honduras Indigenous to the West Indies and South America, allspice has been given its name based on its complex flavor combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, cloves, and juniper berries. Initially discovered by Spanish and Portuguese explorers in search of peppercorn and thus misnamed as “pimenta”. Common use: Allspice has a wide variety of uses from culinary and medicinal, to applications in the perfume industry. The immature berries are dried and ground to produce allspice powder. Commonly used as a baking spice such as in pumpkin pie spice, it is also enjoyed in sweet, hot drinks, like hot apple cider and chai tea, as well as being a key ingredient in Caribbean cuisine and in North African stews and marinades. Allspice extracts are believed to have antioxidant, antiseptic and carminative properties, and to be useful in fighting yeast and fungal infections. One active constituent is the phenol eugenol, which is used by dentists as an antiseptic and a local anesthetic. Storage: Store in a cool, dark, dry place.
