Ingredient: anise seed (Pimpinella anisum) Country of Origin: Egypt or Turkey Anise is a member of the apiaceae family, related to caraway, carrots, cumin, dill and fennel, and possess a very distinctive, pungent, sweet, licorice-like flavor and aroma which can be contributed to its high content of anethole. Common use: Indigenous to the Middle East and Southwestern Asia, this aromatic seed has been enjoyed for centuries in a variety of confections as well as breads and savory dishes, added to flavor herbal medicines and liquors, and often served as a digestive after meals due to carminative properties. It is known to balance the flavors of bay leaf and cinnamon and works well in combination with allspice, cardamom, cloves, cumin, fennel, garlic, nutmeg, pepper and star anise.
